SMA Basketball Teams
We have decided to expand from providing holiday camps and skill development sessions to also offer teams! In 2017 we are sending an U15 and U16 Boys team to Hoop Nation in Tauranga over Labour Weekend.
We are currently exploring the option of also sending an U13 team to the event as well.
Concept behind the teams:
Coach Alby and I have wanted to start coaching teams together for a while. This is our opportunity to bring our vast coaching and playing experience into a team environment. We have done so many holiday camps and Academy sessions over the last couple of years and we love watching players improve their individual skills. However, we also love to coach team concepts and these teams will allow us to do just that.
I have been a Head Coach in the New Zealand National League and have worked with players from all levels from juniors to Tall Black and Tall Ferns. When you coach adults you are basically working with a finished product and I rather work with players at an age where you can still impact their character and skill development. Coach Alby played National League for many years and has been coaching for over 3 decades and I know he feels the same way. The two of us are truly passionate about making young players better!
How are these teams different from a representative or school teams? We are not selecting the best 10 players in each age-group. For higher level teams coaches are always under pressure to win, so they simply tend to select the best players available. That is not what this is about! We want to work with kids that have got good character, love the game and want to get better. This is not just about putting a competitive team on the court – rather we want to teach players to be better on and off the court in line with our core philosophies (the triangle).
Our goal is to teach kids to play the game the right way – be unselfish, skilled, good shooters, humble and competitive.
The Hoops Nation team should complement school and representative basketball as it will help you perform better in those teams. The team concepts and fundamental skills your child will learn with us will easily transfer to every other team they play on.
The long term plan is to take an U17 team to the United States in December 2018 to play in tournaments and have a great life experience.
The goal is to continue training year around with the teams. We will have a smaller amount of Saturday trainings in Term 4 as well as run holiday trainings before Christmas.
In 2018 we will start again in Term 1. We will try and organise some friendly games where available.
The U17 team will train and play in the Hoops Nation and subject to interest go to the United States in December.
The U15 team will train and have the Hoops Nation tournament as their pinnacle event in 2018 and look to go to the United States in 2019.
The tour to the United States will depend on interest from parents. If there is not enough interest then we will continue to participate in the Hoops Nation tournament each year as the pinnacle event for Shot Maker Academy.
